Ways to Study the Bible

Have you ever wondered, “What’s the point of life?” Not everyone believes in God, but if there is a God- who lives in a dimension we can’t even see, controlling life’s circumstances in ways we can’t even imagine- how would we know? If there is an all-powerful God like this, the only way we could know about Him is if He stoops down to our level to tell us.

The Bible is God’s “stooping down” to reveal truth to us. This is not just a book written through one man, with ideas about living a moral life. God brought us the Bible through over 40 different human authors, inspired by the Holy Spirit. It was written over hundreds of years in different nations and in 3 different languages (ancient Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek). God’s power is displayed in using so many different people and circumstances to bring us His one story. Throughout the 66 books of the Bible, God is telling us about who He is, about mankind’s problem of sinfulness, and about His plan to save us.

Here is some of what the Bible says about knowing God’s Word

Luke 6:47-48

Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.

John 8:31-32

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Psalm 119:10-12

With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
Blessed are you, O Lord;
teach me your statutes!

How to Study The Bible

So we know that we should study the Bible, but how do we do it? Because the Bible is God’s Word given to us, it’s important that we study it on God’s terms, not just our own. If we only study God’s Word when we have a problem or when we feel like it, we are not treating it with the that respect it deserves. Imagine a friend who only calls or stops by when she needs something. How does that make you feel? What does it show you about how much she values you as a friend? When we study the Bible based on what we want and not based on who God is, we disrespect God and the gift that He has given us in His word.

4 Common Ways to Study the Bible

Good Bible Study is:

  1. God focused - Praying to understand what God said and what it means for us

  2. Comprehensive - Studying the entire Bible, not just our favorite parts

  3. In Context - We need to understand verses in the context of the situation- not just look at one or two verses in isolation

  4. Holy Spirit Powered - We need God to use the Holy Spirit inside of us to understand the Bible and give us the power to keep going, even on days when we don’t feel like reading

The Meno ColorStudy™ Method is designed to help you study the entire Bible in context and in a comprehensive way. It is also designed to encourage you to be God focused and to ask the Holy Spirit for the power and understanding you’ll need.
